Sainsbury's FreeFrom Apple Tart

Gluten, wheat and diary free.

Overall rating - 3 out of 5

Sainsbury's FreeFrom Bramley Apple Tarts come in a pack of four individual pies. Overall I gave these a rating of 3 out of 5. They do lack the Wow! factor but would be a reasonable dessert cold or heated up.

I would have given them a higher rating but they are let down by the after taste from the pastry.

Good for all - No

Wow! factor - No

Look

Pastry: 5 out of 5

Filling: 5 out of 5

These tarts both inside and out do look good and life a good apple tart should look.

Texture

Pastry: 4 out of 5

Filling: 4 out of 5

The pastry holds together well but ends up being a bit too “solid” for my liking. It may be better when heated, I had it cold when doing this taste test.

The texture of the filling is very good although slightly glutinous.

Flavour

Pastry: 1 out of 5

Filling: 3 out of 5

The pastry is too sweet with a synthetic after taste. It is such a shame as this really lets down this product.

The filling has a nice appley taste which I liked but it is too sweet.

Quantity

Pastry: 4 out of 5

Filling: 5 out of 5

The size of the individual tarts are spot on. The relative quantities of the pastry and filling are about right.

Shelf life

Looking at the best before date on the packet from when I bought this product I think the shelf life must be about a month.

Assessment Criteria

We assess on a number of criteria:

1. We give marks out of five for Look, Texture, Flavour and Quantity.

2. We say whether it is “Good For All”. Is it as good as a non gluten free equivalent so we would be happy to serve it to everyone whether they need gluten free or not.

3. Does it have the Wow! factor. This is reserved for really great tasting food that is a delight to eat.

We also try and give you an indication of the shelf life.
